...
SA Homes and Target are planning on developing pretty much the little parcel of Camp Letterman that remains. This is quite sad. I know, it's not part of the battle, most of it's been lost already, etc., etc. A friend of mine on his blog says basically the same. I disagree, but that's what makes this the good, ole' USA! We can do such things and still be friends.
Anyway, Target is an intrinsically evil company. I haven't been to one in almost two years, nor will I ever go into one again. Why? Not because they want to build on the site of Camp Letterman. Because the are owned by the French, and, since the French don't support the U.S. military (Hey! That's their right! Just remember that the next time some power-hungry dictator with plans of world domination takes their country and they need help getting it back! History repeats itself, and it's happened twice already! What country is the first they expect to help them get it back?). Since they don't support the U.S. military, they will not allow the US Marine Corps to collect "Toys for Tots" at any of their locations.
This is where my problem begins! By doing this, they are not hurting the Marines. They are hurting the children who the Marines collect toys for. The Marines can fight for themselves. These poor children cannot!
So, if for no other reason, please hit this link and sign the petition. Hey, it may not do any good, but it can't hurt, either!

Duane,
Take a look at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/target.asp
It seems that some of the claims about Target fall into the category of internet myth.
Not an arguement for or against the preservation of what remains of Camp Letterman, just provided in my never ending quest to battle urban legends.
(And no, Mr. Rogers was not a Navy SEAL, or an Army Ranger!)

Duane, I have no problem with your political Views. However before you jump on any bandwagon and wave a flag, perhaps as an Amature Historian, you aught to get some facts straight before you post a blog and knock a country. The French were integral in the Creation of The United States. As they Funded the Revolution, making it possible for you to have a country and for us to participate in the Second World War. Which brings me to point number two.
The fact that you seem to think America saved Europe in the second World War and America Alone, illustrates your Ignorannce on the subject. Understand, the French Resistance was integral, and made it possible to free Europe of Nazi tyrany.
Duane,
For someone who claims to be a "History Buff" you sure don't know history very well. I think some much needed research time is in order. Why don't you go back and find out who funded the United States Revolution in the first place. Giving us a Country to begin with. And Oh yeah, and the Statue of Liberty, The most enduring symbol of freedom in the world and how it was a Gift from the people of France. And the Versailles Treaty,of which made it possible for Hitler to rise to power. And the United states representatives who signed the treaty. Also check into our Non-interventionist attitude as Germany went to war in BOTH World Wars. And while your on the Subject look into the French Resistance and how they were integral to the success of liberating Europe from Nazi Tyrany.
Not defending target, Just the French and I think it wise to research the truth before you base an oppinion on popular sentiment. So in conclusion, Lets not jump on the bandwagon and start calling french fries freedom fries.
So, you are right. I don't know my history very well. I forgot that France was the only country that had rsistance fighters (funny how after the war ended, even those who were thought to be collaborators claimed to be part of the resistance. By these numbers, there were more people in the French resistance than there were in France. Hmmmm! New math?) Guess Dutch resistance fighters, and thosein other countries were figments of imagination and products of fabricated history. I stand corrected. My mistake!
Must also have missed that the US was the only country that signed the Treaty of Versailles. WWII was truly our fault. Sorry! Hitler had nothing to do with it.
I am an amateur historian, I guess. Never claimed to be, but alright. Woo-hoo! I can spell, too. Guess you're aren't an amateur speller!
TheFrench did help us in the American Revolution. Correct! For that, they should be thanked. At the time, though, we weren't the most technologically-advanced world superpower that we are now. What one thing keeps our allies safe in a hostile world? The knowledge that if you mess with one of them, you deal with us!
So, we helped in WWI, we helped in WWII. The French helped us. My dad can beat up your dad. You're ugly, and your mother dresses you funny, and other such nonsense can be spouted. Where will it get us? Nowhere.
I don't support France, and I don't agree with French politics. Blasphemy, because they gave us the statue of Liberty. Oh, well. All things the same, would they give it to us now?
I think it is funny that all of these countries who bash us when things are good for them are the first to come running looking for help or handouts when things go bad! Isn't it ironic?
One more word of advice - don't come on my blog and insult me or tell me to learn my history. I know it. I don't know it all, because no one does, but I more than most!
